The Three Best Civilian Jobs for Military Vets

July 27, 2007
After years in the military, many veterans leave the service with skills and experiences that transition well into the civilian marketplace. The structure and discipline of military life make these ex-service members valuable and sought-after employees. The Department of Defense assists deactivated military personnel in finding post-service jobs, matching service skills to civilian occupations, and some private companies even specialize in placing veterans with civilian employers. But often, departing service members want to embark on careers totally unrelated to their military professions.

Military Education Benefits Make Retraining Affordable

Qualified active duty and select reserve military veterans are eligible to receive educational assistance through the Montgomery G.I. Bill (MGIB). Alternative programs are available to assist other reserve members. Veterans are eligible for educational benefits, including college degree programs and technical and vocational school courses. Accredited online and distance learning courses generally are covered under the MGIB, allowing veterans to train for new careers while gradually assimilating back into civilian life.
