New Year's Resolution #1: New Year, New PrioritiesBy Amy FanterLearning & Life Columnist
Three years ago on New Year's Day I decided it was time for a big change. Now I have a great new job where I get to spend more time with my family.
This Can't Be HappeningOn New Year's Day three years ago, my husband woke me up and handed me the phone. "It's your work," he said, "There's a problem, and they need you to come in right away." After I hung up and told my spouse - who hadn't seem me for more than about two hours in the previous 40 - that I had to go to work, he turned to me and said, "Amy, this isn't working." I was stunned and horrified, but not surprised. It wasn't the first, second, or even the fiftieth time I had sacrificed a day with my family in order to do my job. What I Loved, Why I LeftThe truth is, I loved my work. But my husband's words hit home. I spent my days (and a lot of nights) surrounded by great co-workers, challenging projects, and fantastic customers, but my life wasn't balanced. That day I resolved to begin a new career, one that would be as fulfilling and financially rewarding, but would allow me to spend more with my family. What I Did NextI started by researching careers that would allow me to work from home, but had things in common with my current job. While there were several options, five interested me: animation, interior design, fashion design, Web design, and graphic design. I opted for graphic design. While it was a good choice based on my marketing background, I still knew I'd need additional training to make a successful transition. On My WayAfter researching different education programs, I selected one that could give me the skills and knowledge I wanted quickly, but would also allow me to take most classes online. Now I won't lie to you, there were some challenging days trying to handle work, family, and classes, but I kept my focus on the reward that was waiting for me - more time with my family! Once I had my degree in hand, it was simply a matter of time. Before I knew it, I was saying goodbye to my old career and starting on a new one. And frankly, I couldn't be happier.About the Author Amy Fanter can be found working hard for her clients most mornings and playing with her daughter most afternoons. More Creative Career Articles |
