Top 5 Most Flexible Careers
By Joe Taylor Learning & Life Columnist
April 25, 2006
Imagine a career with no cubicle, no commute, and no 9-5 schedule! You can have a great career working freelance in many different fields. Whether you want to stay at home with your kids, or just can't face that morning freeway traffic, a freelance career is the answer.
- Web Design. One popular Web site for freelance web designers boasts over half a million members. To stand out from the crowd, spend as much time paying attention to business and marketing courses as you develop your talent in graphic design class.
- Interior Design. Earning your interior design degree and passing the exams to receive your license can take a bit of time. However, the flexible schedules of most interior design firms attract creative professionals who like to work when inspiration strikes--or when their kids don't have soccer practice.
- E-Commerce. According to a recent study, nearly 750,000 people earn a living by selling goods on eBay. That doesn't count the millions of solo entrepreneurs who sell goods and services on Amazon.com, on Yahoo.com, and on their own web sites. By combining courses in entrepreneurship with computer science classes, you can start your own e-commerce business from home.
- Photography. While freelance photography careers existed long before the Internet, new technology helps good photographers connect with clients more effectively. Government analysts estimate that about 65,000 photographers work as freelancers in the United States. With that kind of competition, courses in business management, marketing, and fine arts can help you build a dream career.
- Accounting/Bookkeeping. Complex financial regulations have created what Forbes Magazine calls a "seller's market" for certified bookkeepers and CPAs. Performing well in your financial courses and investing in a powerful laptop lets you conduct your business from home or from your clients' offices, all on your own schedule.
The thought of skipping dull commutes and boring meetings should be more than enough motivation to get through the courses that you'll need to kick-start your freelance career.
