Top 5 Careers in Demand by Employers
By Joe Taylor Learning & Life Columnist

If you've got the right career training, you can brush off complaints that the job market might be slowing down. College students with their eyes on higher than average salaries should check out these fields, recently identified in national surveys.
- Nursing. As Americans live longer and require more care, our nation faces a critical nursing shortage. Therefore, recent graduates of nursing schools should enjoy strong starting salaries and tremendous benefits. If you're willing to travel, many nursing schools can place you with employers that will send you to high-demand areas in exchange for even bigger paychecks.
- Teaching. A lack of trained teachers has created some innovative hiring practices in many school systems. In many states, you can now shift gears from another career and start teaching while earning your education degree. This policy change lets you share your life experience with students sooner.
- Medical Technology. Modern healthcare relies on sophisticated lab analysis and other marvels of engineering. Hospitals, laboratories, and assisted living facilities require specialists with technical degrees to process tests and operate advanced equipment. With training from an accredited technical college, you can find a job that's close to home that lets you enjoy helping patients get better without having to earn a medical degree.
- Information Technology. Investors have geared up for another chance at online glory, as "Web 2.0" companies use cheap hardware and sophisticated software to accomplish what the first tech bubble couldn't. While programmers take courses to learn tools like AJAX and .NET, employers scour college campuses for the next generation of technology gurus.
- Accounting. Preventing financial disasters like Enron and WorldCom from happening again has become top priority for recent graduates of accounting schools. With complex new regulations like the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, college graduates with the most up-to-date financial training can land lucrative gigs at top accounting firms.
With the right degree in hand, you could find yourself very much in-demand in one of these areas and enjoy a rewarding career.
