Teaching Jobs -- Always in High Demand

Teaching is one of the few professions that consistently enjoys high demand. Schools are understaffed, classes are somewhat crowded, and there just don't seem to be enough teachers to go around. If you've ever thought about pursuing a teaching job, now is an excellent time to go back to school and become certified.

Certification for Teaching Jobs

In truth, not all teaching jobs require certification. Some teaching jobs merely require proficiency in a given skill without any accompanying certification. In addition, many teachers who work in private elementary or high schools can sometimes manage with only a bachelors degree in their given field. But if you want to teach at the university level or at a public school, you'll usually need a teaching certificate or graduate degree.

What Kind of Salary do Teachers Earn?

It really depends on what subject you're teaching, what type of students you have, your school's location, the level of your education, and a host of other variables. According to the US Department of Labor, the median salary for kindergarten, elementary, middle, and high school teachers hovers around $42,000 a year. For postsecondary teachers, the median salary was just over $50,000 in 2004. But there are also private tutors, special education teachers, English teachers who live abroad, and a host of other teaching positions. As you can imagine, it's quite possible to make well over six figures if you manage to find the ideal situation.

What Kinds of Teachers Are Needed?

Teachers are needed all over, but math and science teachers are probably in greatest demand. However, you should try and teach something about which you are truly passionate. If you love cooking, teach cooking classes. If the martial arts excite you, teach them instead. If you enjoy Shakespeare, try becoming an English teacher. The most effective teachers are the ones who are able to infect their students with genuine passion and excitement.
