New Year's Resolution #3: Be More Successful

Where were you in 2005? Were you in the secretarial pool, typing letters for managers? Were you a file clerk, organizing folders for the human resources director and wishing you had his job? Did you spend the Christmas rush catering to busy shoppers in your sales job - and wonder about the salary of the accountant who kept your store's books? Or spend Christmas dinner listening to your sister talk about her exciting new job in information technology?

How You Can Get Ahead

If you see yourself in any of these scenarios - or if you feel you've come to a dead end in your current position - make 2006 the year you move up or move on. How? By getting new credentials or beefing up the qualifications that you already have. You can get an online degree in human resources or project management, for instance, without giving up the job you currently have.

In fact, most students today study on the side while they continue with work and family commitments. If they can do it, so can you. You don't need a CPA to do accounting; certification will get your foot in the door. Online degree programs in business or information technology abound, and you can start most of them now, while your new year's motivation is high.

Why Education Pays Off

Government studies show that salary is directly tied to education, so taking that course or getting that additional certification will usually pay off. In general, college graduates make nearly twice as much as high school grads, and some college is economically better than none.

Take another look at the job you've got. Your employer may be willing to help out with the costs of your education. At the very least, discussing your career goals with your employer will display your motivation and your drive. You just might get that promotion and make more money.
