Top 5 New Technology CareersBy Joe Taylor Learning & Life Columnist
Technology has changed the way we do business. New tools and tests help us live longer, more fulfilled lives. In the same way, technology has created a set of careers that didn't exist even a few years ago. Five emerging career opportunities hold the most potential for current college degree graduates with a passion for new ideas.
- E-Commerce Specialist. Amazon.com and eBay created many of the rules of the e-commerce game. Today, hordes of small businesses benefit from their innovations. Armed with marketing and business degrees, college graduates can help companies of all sizes integrate their products and services into online marketplaces.
- Video Game Designer. Last year, the net receipts of the video game industry eclipsed those of the movie exhibition business for the first time. Hollywood has taken notice, funneling more cash into new games for the Sony, Nintendo, and Xbox platforms. By combining computer science courses with classes on graphic design and storytelling, students are making themselves ideal candidates for careers in video game design.
- Computer Network Administrator. Even "mom and pop" convenience stores require reliable network connections to process payments from customers. Courses in computer networking can help you start a career as a company's networking guru. You can even use the skills you build during your computer science degree program working as an independent contractor on network installations and troubleshooting.
- Database Administrator. Once businesses can rely on their networks, they can start using connected databases to leverage their knowledge of customers, inventory, and strategy. By taking courses on data management and security, you can build the skills that employers need to grow their companies and maintain their client relationships.
- Medical Technologist. Doctors have better resources than ever before to diagnose and treat illnesses. Unfortunately, most doctors couldn't learn how to operate these tools in medical school--they weren't invented yet! By earning a degree in medical technology you can learn to run these tools and process valuable tests that help save lives.
If you love technology and innovation, one of these hot tech careers may be right for you.
