Finding Your Place: The Best Job EnvironmentsBy Francine L. HuffLearning & Life Columnist
Not all work environments are created equal, and you don't always know whether or not you'll like working someplace until you've actually accepted a job. Understanding some of the different types of workplaces before beginning a job hunt can help you go into a new work situation with more realistic expectations.
Large or Small?Think about the types of companies out there and how your talents and skills will fit in. If you're interested in an accounting or business administration career, for example, you have the option of working for several types of companies. Working for a large company may allow you to have more job opportunities, a comprehensive benefits package, tuition reimbursement, or other perks. You're more likely to work with a team in a large business, whereas with a small one, you might be the team. Smaller companies usually have fewer opportunities, but they may allow more flexibility for employees to take on different roles. You may also face less bureaucracy at a smaller company.Non-profit or For-Profit?If you want to work someplace where you're making a difference for your community, then you might consider a career in social services or community work. Attending a psychology degree program can give you the background you need for this field. Nonprofit agencies generally offer work that is intellectually and emotionally fulfilling, and most employees truly love what they do. While nonprofits often have a positive work environment, be prepared for lower pay than in the for-profit sector. However, many for-profit companies are very focused on the bottom line, and that may put pressure on employees to perform and increase profits at the expense of other priorities. Before sending out your next batch of resumes, think about the type of environments you would feel most comfortable working in. Once you get a new job, you'll want to look forward to going to your workplace each day and feel comfortable when you get there. Sources
