Today's information technology professionals are paid very well, they work in hundreds of different settings, and companies are clamoring to hire them. No more "computer geek" - IT pros are "computer chic."

For those of us who feel triumphant just learning to program an iPod, it's not hard to understand why companies will pay top-dollar for qualified information technology professionals. Nearly every business today relies on technology to keep track of data, conduct business, and protect the identities of their clients. That's why the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that IT is the fastest growing sector in the economy. Yet, a residual effect of the dot-com crash is an acute shortage of qualified IT workers.

It Pays To Be in IT

According to Bob Cohen, senior vice president of the Information Technology Association of America, our IT fears are no longer warranted. "There was a period, even after the recession, where businesses were very hesitant to invest in new systems and make capital investments based on economic uncertainty... We've certainly moved beyond that today, which translates into better employment prospects for IT workers and a more dynamic market."

In fact, even with all the fluctuations in the IT sector, it remains one of the highest-paying entry-level jobs, with computer and information system managers being one of the 12 top-paying jobs in the country. When it comes to financial security, a degree in information technology might provide a little insurance.

Your Future is Secure

The IT sector will experience a 55% increase in employment between now and 2014. Because technology is constantly changing, there will always be a need for IT professionals. Although the field may become more competitive, your four-year degree in information technology puts you at the top of the heap.

And the best part? Even though a degree in IT is practical, that doesn't mean it's boring. Information technology is one of the most exciting, challenging, fast-paced careers out there. So bye-bye geek... IT is chic.
