Nearly every business relies on accountants in some capacity. Today, accountants hold over a million jobs in all sectors of business, public and private. With an online accounting degree, it's easier than you think to get your foot in the door of an accounting job that can lead to a rewarding, lucrative career. Keeping Count of AccountantsThere are many different types of accountants who perform a wide variety of tasks and specialize in various fields. For example, public accountants provide services such as income tax preparation and personal financial consulting. Management accountants keep track of their employers' finances and provide financial advice based on cost and asset management. During your accounting training, you will be able to choose your preferred field and take courses based on your interests. Get the Right College DegreeMost practicing accountants obtain a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license. Additionally, the majority of accounting positions require at least a bachelor's degree in a relevant field. Employers usually reserve the best accounting jobs, including management positions, for applicants with an advanced degree such as a Master of Business Administration (MBA) or a Master of Accounting. Many online education programs prepare students for advanced accounting with classes on financial analysis, capital structure, and risk management. A Bright FutureAs the U.S. economy continues to grow and businesses increase in size and number, students who enter the accounting field should be pleasantly surprised by the job prospects available. Changing financial laws and stricter regulations have already added to the growing demand for accountants. The median annual salary for an accountant was $50,770 in 2004. Salaries and benefits for qualified accountants should be on the rise over the next decade as well.
