Business careers have that suit and tie appeal and that aura of power that draws the ambitious, upwardly mobile types like magnets draw metals. Everyone knows that business careers can pay the big bucks; that's why online MBA programs outstrip all other online degrees, and undergraduate business schools have little trouble placing recent graduates. To no one's surprise, perks abound.
The Signing BonusIf you're a business graduate getting your start in the profession, you can market your education to the job that most sweetens the pot. With more education, the payoff's even bigger. In 2005, MBA salaries and signing bonuses took a 13.5% jump over 2004.Negotiable SalaryWhile other career paths pay what the government or the union dictates, business salaries are subject to negotiation, and you can deal for perks above and beyond your paycheck.Job MobilityGone are the days when business careers meant signing on for the long haul. Today's worker changes jobs because mobility pays. In fact, a recent survey shows that managers who've been with a company two years make more than those who've been there a decade.Geographic MobilityThe globalization of business means more opportunity to live abroad, if that's what you want. Since business is everywhere, you can move without fear of loss of employment opportunity. And don't worry about the cost of moving. In business, your new employer picks up the tab.Professional DevelopmentIf you've got a business degree and a job, your employer will likely pick up your professional development expenses, including the cost of your MBA education.As a general rule in business, the larger the company and the larger the city in which it is located, the larger the executive compensation.
