Looking for both flexibility and job stability? This New Year, discover the field of accounting and finance, and make a career change you won't regret! With competitive salaries and high demand, the accounting and finance industry may be exactly what you are looking for.

Not Just Number Crunching: The Rapidly Changing Field of Finance

Accountants work to keep financial records accurate, perform internal audits, track investments, and develop financial strategies for businesses and organizations. Here are four reasons why enrolling in a degree program in accounting and finance should be your New Year's resolution:
  1. Countless Career Options
Accountants work in all different sectors--from government to non-profit and from business to banking. They find jobs as auditors, tax managers, or budget analysts, and often help develop a company's financial strategies.
  2. Huge Demand
According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, opportunities for accountants are expected to grow faster than average through 2014. In fact, the National Association of Colleges and Employers lists accounting as one of the top ten degrees for 2007.
  3. Great Salaries
Investing in an accounting degree program pays off. According to the BLS, the median annual earnings for accountants were $50,770 in May 2004.
  4. Job Flexibility
Accountants not only have the flexibility of working in any sector, but also of going into business for themselves as independent CPAs or tax advisors. According to the BLS, approximately one out of every10 accountants is self-employed.

Getting the education you need in accounting has never been easier! There are hundreds of accounting degree programs offering the necessary finance courses. But be sure to make your education count by ensuring your university courses are accredited. Internships in accounting, computer expertise and knowledge of international accounting will also make you a more competitive applicant.
